Moscow, July 19 – AIF-Moscow.

Vice-Admiral Daniel Abel, deputy head of the US Coast Guard, said that the United States needed six new icebreakers to successfully compete with Russia in the Arctic, RIA Novosti reports.

Ice fight powers. Is the arctic race waiting for the Arctic?

Abel said that currently the United States has the only icebreaker Polar Star, which is already 40 years old. According to him, in the near future the United States will need at least six icebreakers, including three heavy ones.

During his speech at a conference on the effects of melting of the Arctic ice on naval operations, Abel also noted that by now Russia has created six new bases in the Arctic and built six new icebreakers.

Note that earlier, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo accused the Russian side of "aggressive" behavior in the Arctic. In turn, the senior official of the Arctic Council from the Russian Federation, Nikolay Korchunov, called this statement absurd.
