“Tom Cruise somehow get out himself”

The film “Mission Impossible: Consequences” is the most gallant espionage thriller of this year. Women in it are not the usual trophies for the special agent, but full participants in the game. And these women are extremely rare. To Michelle Monahan, representing the bride of Ethan Hunt since 2006, and Rebecca Ferguson, who already played a spy from Sweden in the last series, two really big actresses joined. This is the star of the “Black Panther” Angela Bassett and just nominated for “Emmy” for the role in the series “Crown” Briton Vanessa Kirby. Especially for “Kommersant Style” Egor Moskvitin met with Ferguson, Kirby and Bassett in Paris and learned from them why to be Hunt’s girls better than the Bond girls.

“It starts with a well-written story”

– A month ago I looked at “Eight Ocean Girlfriends” and thought: “I wish they’d taken off something about spies!” But there are four of you in the Mission so far. What other four actresses would you take aboard?

“Oh, God, who to choose!” So, let it be Helen Mirren, Helena Bonham Carter and Isabelle Huppert. But we need one more. Do you want to join us? You are not a woman, but it does not matter to me! It seems you are strong, join.

“Let’s take Nicole Kidman!”

– Also a good plan!

– In one interview you said that your heroine is a female version of Ethan Hunt. If the producers suggested that you take off the spin-off about the adventures of Ilsa Faust, would you dedicate yourself to him in the same way as Tom Cruise “Mission”? Producing, editing, total control?

"Tom Cruise somehow get out himself"

– Good question! I think no. The more you see how Tom works, the more you learn about his professional ethics. The more you understand how much energy he puts into all this, the less you want to go the same way (laughs). He helps to write, he performs all these tricks, he is the first to go to the site and the last one leaves it. Yes, I would be blown away on the first day! I do not know how he does it, but it’s very, very impressive. But it would be great to see a film about Ilsa. Although it can not be torn from Ethan. These two are in the bundle, so Tom would have to withdraw there anyway.

– When it comes to shooting and fighting, your character reveals her own distinctive style. For example, a scene in a nightclub: here she is striking a big guy, but she slips off the dance floor like a cat. This for you, too, came up with choreographers or is it your find?

"Tom Cruise somehow get out himself"

– All our tricks, the whole choreography of the scenes – the result of the wonderful creativity of Wade Eastwood and his team. Christopher McQuoughry certainly has his vision – including a vision of fights. And I also tried to bring something of my own. But I’m not going to attribute myself to the merits: behind each of my tricks is the script writer, the choreographer and, maybe, Tom. I’m just trying to understand what they want from me, patiently making duplicates and sometimes fooling around. If you’re lucky, then at such times they will say to me: “Oh, it’s good.” And some of the ideas will fall into the film. As for the gait, the heroine is steep and elegant, and we thought about how to show it through her movements. So there is nothing accidental in the frame.

– And in the “Mission”, and in the recent “The Greatest Showman” one of – I emphasize, only one! – the functions of your heroines – to distract the protagonist from his true love. Are not you afraid to play two fatal women in a row?

“It’s funny that you describe them as” la femme fatale “, because I see them quite different. In some ways, you are right, but at the same time I play two women with their own goals, and these goals are not limited to the kidnapping of the hero. For example, Ethan and Ilsa, they do not have relationships, they work together, and there is something beautiful and romantic about this. But she does not steal it! As for the “Greatest Showman,” there, for me, it was about true love. I would never have agreed to consider her act as an attempt to kidnap the hero Hugh, because it would be a real evil, and boredom. To convincingly play such a heroine, you need to start from your own deep needs. So I could not explain her actions differently.

– But the Swedes have their own Ethan Hunt – special agent Carl Hamilton. Have you read books about him, watched movies? Is he as cool?

“I saw a couple of movies.” Stellan Skarsgard in the image of Hamilton – it’s just fantastic! I do not know how many books and films they released, I suspect there are many, but this is a very good comparison: we have our own Ethan Hunt!

– This is not your first movie about spies: you played a Russian defector in the drama “Despite the falling snow.” I do not like this question – “how did you prepare for the role?” – but since the film is about my country, I can not not ask it.

– It was a very fast casting, so I honestly relied on the director Shamim Sharif – this is after all the screen version of her book, so I completely entrusted the preparation and research to her. In the story, my heroine lives in Russia and the United States, so I mentally had to skip back and forth. I tried to learn about such a life as much as possible, but in general, this is one of those films inside of which you feel uncomfortable.

“But he’s still good!” In general, he, and your other recent films on books – “Snowman”, “Girl on the train” – quite gloomy. You yourself prefer what literature? Will you give me some book advice for the summer?

– Short stories by Dorothy Parker. For more I now, as you know, there is no time (shortly before the premiere, Rebecca had a daughter – Ed. Ed.). Plus, I get a lot of scripts, and I’m trying to choose something that would draw me not only as an actress, but also as a producer. And I’m absolutely fascinated by journalism. And it’s not about a journalist worthy of the Pulitzer Prize, but about various articles about strong women of the past. I’m waiting for the story, from which the movie will come out!

РIn spy movies, there is often a cliché: the heroine or the hero must decide which of the two partners to save. Choose: courageous and laconic Ethan or cheerful and sensitive Benji?

“Definitely I’ll save Simon Pegg!” Tom Cruise somehow get out himself.
