From July 17 to July 22, the "Tourism Week on the Great Silk Road" took place in Buryatia. It was attended by representatives of the Russian regions and foreign countries – Mongolia, China, Uzbekistan, Greece. Each of the days of the event was dedicated to the different directions of the development of gastronomic tourism in the republic, said Deputy Minister of Tourism of Buryatia Evgeny Malygin.

The "Week of Tourism on the Great Silk Road" was organized by the Government of the Republic of Buryatia in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation and UNWTO – the World Tourism Organization at the United Nations. The event is intended to reveal the potential of our region for the development of cultural and cognitive tourism, to present potential tourists with the rich heritage of the ancient route and increase the tourist flow, "Malygin said.

The purpose of the event is to increase the awareness of potential tourists about the significance of the heritage of the trade route "The Great Silk Road", the disclosure of the tourist potential of historical territories, the presentation of the resource, potential for the development of cultural and cognitive tourism in the regions and cities of the Russian Federation, reports baikaltravel.ru.

Over 100 people took part in the event, including representatives of the tourist business, tourism workers, owners of restaurants, hotels, ethnocomplexes, as well as invited experts – among them the president of the International Ethnogastronomic Center Leonid Gelibterman, Professor of the School of Tourism and Tourism of Hong Kong Polytechnic University Vantani Suntikul, Doctor of Arts, the founder of the Karavan Group restaurant chain in the Republic of Uzbekistan Natalia Musina, French chef the chef, the owner of the prestigious Michelin star Michelle Lenz and others.

Specifically to the "Week of Tourism on the Great Silk Road", the Museum’s catalog of unique historical and ethnographic items was presented at the National Museum of Buryatia. It includes finds of the archaeological heritage of the Hunnu period, Buddhist religious relics, and decorative and applied art items. In the village of Tarbagatai the forum participants got acquainted with the national cuisine, culture and way of life of the Old Believers (family), in the ethnographic complex "Steppe Nomad" in the picturesque Atsagat valley – with the culture and customs of the Buryats.

Tourism in Buryatia is one of the leading and most important sectors of the economy. Over the past ten years, the number of tourists visiting the republic has increased six-fold: in 2007 it was about 200 thousand people, in 2017 – about 1.2 million. The region is visited by visitors from Mongolia, China, South Korea, Germany, France. The volume of paid services rendered to tourists in 2017 than 2.5 billion rubles, which is 4.6% more than in the the previous year. The volume of taxes paid by the tourist industry grew by 40% in 2017 and amounted to 220.3 million rubles.
