LCD “Republic” is the largest project of both ARCHIMATICS and the country. On the outskirts of Kiev, not far from the new Metro station Teremki, the development company will build, in fact, a small city for more than 14,000 apartments on average – 7-9 residential floors. ARCHIMATIK also owns the entire infrastructure of the housing and communal services – starting from improvement and social facilities, ending with the shopping center “Respublika” – a huge mall in which both the Ferris wheel and the roller coaster fit. Public areas in the project paid special attention.

The entire complex is subordinated to a well-thought-out hierarchy of spaces. Closed yards of urban blocks, with the natural environment and paths among lawns – only for residents. Outside, between the quarters are pedestrian paths that lead to areas where social life will center: it can be sports and children’s playgrounds or gardens, places for recreation with elements of landscape design or, as in the first stage – a public center.

To accommodate the public center, the architects had an area of 100 to 100 meters between the first four urban blocks of the complex. The author of the project, Nikolai Morozov, said that he wanted to make communication between the residents of the quarter as comfortable and interesting as possible. Therefore, the idea was born to unite the heated premises with open areas, so that the all-weather “communicator” turned out. It was important to avoid similarity with the shopping center: the public center had to be identified precisely as an element of improvement.

The main idea is the following: in the center there is a decorative landscape part and a large playground, around which “islands” of restaurants and shops are built. They are united by a “green” roof, which from the inside is perceived as a visor. Thanks to the openings in the roof and the lights in the rooms, there is plenty of natural light. Free passages under the roof continue the routes of footpaths. The total area of the center is 1670 m². In general, an exemplary, an area where “you exchange with other people unfamiliar to you, and not only money and goods – but also social attention, news, unusual behavior, mood” turned out.

The scenario is that adults sit, relax and talk, the children are busy and communicate, but they are close, they are seen, everyone feels calm and safe. This is one of the reasons why the roof was not made to be fully exploited. If a child goes into a rush of research activities on the roof, even if it is safe, coffee is not so pleasantly drunk. Children’s playground is a special story. Working on the project, the architects wanted to find non-standard solutions, create an ideal space for leisure. For the sake of searching for new ideas, a children’s focus group was created to learn from the original source what an ideal children’s playground should be. To help, the children’s studio came with which ARCHIMATICS had good relations. The students of the studio from 10 to 15 years received a real task – to come up with the concept of a children’s playground for a community center. The result, according to Nikolai Morozov, surpassed all expectations – even profile studios that deal with sites, this did not offer. The concepts were worked out and full of fresh ideas – for example, the whole team of ARCHIMATICS, who abandoned work and gathered to protect projects, was impressed with the idea of ”connecting the Middle Ages with cheese.” Architects received not just a positive charge on a working day, but also a lot of insights for work. One of the concepts was liked so much that at the next stages of the project development it will be offered to the customer.

If we continue the children’s theme, we can not fail to note the similarity of the social center with the famous “oval” kindergarten in Tokyo, built according to the Takaharu Tezuka project. The same open area in the center, sprouting from the roof of the trees, only instead of cafes – classes and rooms for games. Although the architects emphasize that they were inspired by completely different prototypes. The rolling part of the roof resembling a hill in winter will turn into a hill for sledging, the rest is closed. It is the green roof that makes the public center perceive as an element of improvement, in addition, it is pleasant to look at from the windows of nearby houses. The roof was nominated for the Ukrainian Urban Awards 2018 in the category “Innovations in Construction / Green Roof” and received many positive feedback from the jury.

Many features of the concept of LCD “Republic” are built on the principles of modern urbanistics: pedestrians – the main ones, machines “behind the perimeter”, there are squares, each with its activity, there is much to do in winter, and in summer and rain. It is easy to imagine how these streets are filled with people, because they invite you to leave the house and everyone offers an activity to taste, turning the quarters on the outskirts into a wonderful little town.
