American scientists developed a composite material that can change its shape when heated by light, as well as its magnetic properties. Reports the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Specialists Tufts University, under the leadership of Fiorenzo Omenetto, together with colleagues from the Los Alamos National Laboratory, are already working on the creation of models of independent actuators. For this purpose, a material capable of changing its shape has been invented. And the change is possible by using external stimuli, which can be magnetic fields, light or heating.
To give the material mobility, it is necessary to locate in a magnetic field, and its irradiation with light occurs. Scientists have already created a simple engine, the gears of which are made of a fragment of a composite that changes shape under the influence of light.
