God did not distance himself from man, but man from God

The person puts boundaries himself and decides whether to be with God or against God. How did the consciousness change during the Fall? Apostasy (falling away from God) is a change of mind, and a person needs to come to himself. Repentance (etavaia) is a change of mind, a return to the primary meaning, to the understanding of truth. About it "Pravda.Ru" Archpriest Alexander Agyikin, rector of the Epiphany Cathedral.

God did not distance himself from man, but man from God

– So where is the border between the fact that the Lord gave man the right to own the world, and in what man can not decide himself, and where to put the boundaries of decision and possession?

– The person puts boundaries himself, he decides, to be with God or to be against God. He already owns the world, God gave him this world. But he turned this property against God. Parable "About the Prodigal Son" This is again the repetition of what happened in Eden, in Eden. When the Father-God gave man everything. Everything belonged to man, he had only to remain in love, in harmony with God.

But a man says to his father: "I do not need you, I want to live without you, I want to leave … I want to turn away from you, distance from you, and use what you gave me. I do not need you". This is the worst, it’s a disaster. And even in our notions, when we raise our children, the worst thing is to hear that "I do not need you, I’ll live without you".

And the most important remedy for evil, which entered the world, surprisingly, is death. If there is no death, then the evil would remain forever, it would be endless. Therefore, a person is deprived of Paradise. Adam and Eve, who understood that such evil, who tasted this evil, could no longer be in the vicinity of this tree of life, otherwise the evil would be eternal.

“Because they knew evil?”

– Yes, they obeyed evil. In general, the consciousness of man has changed. At the moment when Adam listened to Eve, he could say: "No, I will not". But she persuaded him to join in, and he ate. And that as a result, they saw what they had acquired? Do they become like Gods? No.

They saw that they were naked. The book of Genesis says that they learned and saw that they were naked, that they were naked. This they did not notice in the harmony and love in which they were before. And now they began to be ashamed of each other, they felt ashamed of themselves, because each of them saw that he was naked, began to be shy.

And they realized that they can not appear before God in this way. They hid and sewed themselves some first clothes from the leaves, hid in the thickets. As God looked for them in Paradise – this is an interesting description. Of course, it is mundane, to be accessible, it is understandable to man, because God is not anthropomorphic.

We can not say that God walked, he sought. But the writer writes that God walked, searched for Adam and cried: "Adam, where are you?" And he was hiding from God. The world broke – cracked in its very foundation. That love and harmony that existed between God and man were destroyed. God sought man, and man was afraid and hid from God.

“Why is it so terrible that Adam began to hesitate and could come before God only in leaves or something else?” He did not do evil, he did not do anything so bad and painful to anyone, only to himself.

– It became clear that the harmony is destroyed. Nothing previously hindered the fellowship of God and man. God was always there. And Adam, together with Eve, enjoyed the closeness of God. And now they became afraid of this intimacy, because although nothing had changed, they had been naked before, but they saw their misdeed and nakedness. This was an obstacle to communion with God.

– Why was this an obstacle for Adam and Eve?

– God could not break their free will, he gave man free will, this is the difference between man and animal. We say that God created man, created from dust, from the dust of the earth, from all the world created man. That is, he collected all that is in the world.

But God endowed man with the breath of life, his Spirit of God and his image and likeness, which raised him above the animals. Yes, a person in many respects is similar to the whole world, for some properties he is close to plants, fish, to animals. In it, in its composition, probably, there is the entire periodic table, because it absorbed everything.

It differs from everything precisely by this free will that connects it with God. But this image of God began to be perceived differently by man. He was naked, he stayed like that, but he could no longer communicate with God as he had before.

– And it was impossible to somehow explain to the person that you can communicate, as before? God is merciful and can forgive everything.

– Of course, he is merciful. But it was necessary to return consciousness to man. We are now talking about a change in consciousness. In the terminology of the Orthodox Christian Church there is a concept "repentance", in Greek it sounds – "etavoya", and also means a change of mind. That is, a return to the primary meaning, to the understanding of truth. Here apostasy (falling away from God) is also a change of mind, and it is necessary for a person to come to himself. It’s the same as described in the parable "About the Prodigal Son".
